We’re here to answer all your BURNING summer cloth diapering questions!

Questions we frequently begin to hear when the heat goes up outside:

Is my baby going to be hot in cloth diapers?

The simple answer is no.  Your baby will not be any warmer in cloth diapers than they would be in a plastic disposable diaper that doesn’t breathe.  Remember that cloth diapers are just like clothing, breathable fabrics make for a more comfortable and breathable diaper.  Much more comfortable than plastic in the heat!  Plus what’s cuter than a kissable baby in nothing but an adorable cloth diaper?!

Why are my baby’s cloth diapers suddenly leaking when they weren’t before?

Oh the age old question, has an age old answer.  What goes in, must come out.  As the temperature rises, often so does your baby’s food/liquid intake.  In the heat we offer more breastmilk, formula, water to our babies and toddlers to keep them hydrated.  But, all that extra liquid has to go somewhere, and soon diapers that didn’t normally flood are now overfull.

The easy answer is to change your baby a little more frequently to prevent any accidents.  However, when that isn’t always a possibility, doublers will now become your friend.  A doubler is an extra piece of absorbent material that you can add to your baby’s diaper to boost the absorbency.  Doublers can come in several different materials and sizes.  I prefer hemp doublers since they tend to hold more and don’t give compression leaks.  Thirsties Hemp Doublers are a great option (they come in Size Small and Large) for adding absorbency to your diapers.  Great to add to night diapers as well as baby begins to sleep longer stretches.

Do babies get more diaper rash in the summer?  How do I prevent it?

Yes, babies CAN get more diaper rash in the summer because of the heat.  But there are simple ways to prevent it.

Changing your baby a little more frequently in the heat, making sure to clean and wipe thoroughly.

Use a small amount of a protective or preventative barrier cream on your baby’s bottom to keep wetness at bay and away from the skin.  GroVia Magic Stick and Motherlove Everyday Balm are good choices.

Give your baby some open air time.  Lay down a towel and put baby down sans diaper to let them get some fresh air where the sun doesn’t normally shine!  A little bit of air drying can actually help the diaper area stay cool and rash free.

What is a cloth swim diaper?

A cloth or reusable swim diaper is a specific cloth diaper meant for use while swimming.  Many swimming pools require TWO swim diapers on a baby to prevent pool closing accidents.  Often they require a disposable swim diaper with a reusable swim diaper on top of it, or they require two reusable swim diapers.  The big surprise for most people is that they don’t realize that disposable and reusable swim diapers don’t keep pee in the diaper.  That’s why pools are chlorinated.  Swim diapers are meant to keep poop out of the pool only.

I generally always feel that reusable or cloth swim diapers are better at containment because of the REAL elastic that they’re made of.  Real elastic is better at containing runny poop than paper disposable elastic any day.  Thirsties Duo Swim Diapers are adjustable and make a great swim diaper with double gussets.

Can’t I just use one of my pocket diaper shells or diaper covers as a swim diaper?

You definitely could use one of your pocket diaper shells or diaper covers as a second swim diaper.  Just remember that swim diapers are made with a special swim elastic that’s meant to hold up to chlorinated pools.  Your favorite pocket diaper or cover is not, so try not to be disappointed if it falls apart after many uses in the pool.  I would also pick and use the same cover each time as a designated swim diaper so you don’t risk ruining your entire stash of covers.
